Dedication of the Canadian Veterans Memorial

On September 22, 2006, the Canadian Veterans Memorial was given as a gift from the Dutch community as an expression of thanks to Canada and its Armed Forces, for their role in the liberation of Holland and Belgium during World War II. It was presented to the World War II Veterans of Canada and the City of London at 11:00 am in Victoria Park, London, Canada.

This formal affair was hosted by the Veterans Memorial Committee and The Netherlands Government through its Consulate in London. Many Dutch officials were present at this event as well as noted members of London’s City Hall, The Federal Government in Ottawa and the Provincial Government of Ontario. A large crowd of Dutch emigrants was also there to thank Canada for its contribution to their freedom and liberty. They were there to express gratitude to the World War II Veterans, who where well represented by soldiers who actually fought on the battlefields of Holland.

The dedication was well represented through various arms of the Canadian Military, both modern and those WWII soldiers. The Royal Canadian Legion and various members of the Armed Forces also helped to make this a special event by providing a Colour Guard as well as a Royal Canadian Cadet’s flag standards. All levels of Canada’s military history were present including Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police and members of the Military Reserves. Holland had its military presence at the dedication through the Netherlands Defence Attaché Lieutenant-Colonel Henri Schevers who with other Dutch Consular officials helped in the unveiling of the Memorial.

With a pipers lament, bands playing, wreath lying, aircraft flyovers, official speeches and the presence of so many, this was a very successful dedication. It purpose; to thank those Veterans who returned from WWII but also those near eight thousand fallen soldiers who still lay in Dutch soil today and whose grave sites are marked on the memorial.

The Carillon and Memorial will remind all future generations of just how valued Canada is by the Dutch, for giving the largest gift of human life in Liberating Holland during WWII. The bells of the Carillon will chime this expression of gratitude for all to hear and the sculpture will proclaim why the bells ring. Thank you Canada.
